christchurch day 3 – in search of dolphins in akaroa

100705_450d_img_6328

day 3 looked like being the last near decent day weather-wise so we drove over to akaroa to search for the rate hector dolphins

i managed to log on to the cruise place’s website the night before and book us 4 places to avoid us being disappointed at the end of our windy journey. however when we got there we saw a lovely alternative company which seemed to be run by this little dog who could hear the dolphins sounds and help locate them

100705_450d_img_6319

but we’d already booked on the bigger cruise so we stuck with that.

 100705_450d_img_6315

we arrived a bit early so spent a while looking round the shops.

100705_450d_img_6318

the shops seemed to have decided to only sell things beginning with the letter S

100705_450d_img_6339

here’s kezia

100705_450d_img_6321

100705_450d_img_6322

100705_450d_img_6324

and here’s me for a change

100705_450d_img_6331

and here’s kezia again

100705_450d_img_6333

100705_450d_img_6336

akoroa is famously a french settlement and has some lovely old building

100705_450d_img_6338

100705_450d_img_6340

we didn’t hear anyone speaking french

100705_450d_img_6341

but we did find a fudge shop

100705_450d_img_6342

and once we’d had our picnic it was time to go over and get on our boat

 100705_450d_img_6344

here it is, in the sea

100705_450d_img_6347

(quick loo stop first of course)

100705_450d_img_6353

and jane texted a few friends back home in auckland just in case we were lost at sea

100705_450d_img_6360

the girls dressed up warm

100705_450d_img_6364

100705_450d_img_6366

then off we went.

100705_450d_img_6371

there was a nice commentary by the driver who pointed out various features and things which i’ve now forgotten

100705_450d_img_6379

100705_450d_img_6387

100705_450d_img_6388

there were some sheep seemingly stuck on the edge of vertical hills

100705_450d_img_6390

and this is known as the elephant or something

100705_450d_img_6401

then suddenly someone sighted a hector’s dolphin

100705_450d_img_6414

a solitary one which did a little nose round our side of the boat then disappeared

100705_450d_img_6415

i got these snaps in the few seconds it went near us

100705_450d_img_6416

the next 90 minutes of the cruise was spent wobbling about in the pacific.  the swell seemed quite large

100705_450d_img_6417

we all felt quite sick , especially poor old esther.

100705_450d_img_6418

here are some penguins.  we saw quite a few of them.  so we had the world’s smallest dolphin and the world’s smallest penguin in the world’s biggest ocean

100705_450d_img_6426

here’s an albatross.  imagine having one of them as a necklace

100705_450d_img_6429

100705_450d_img_6428

there was plenty of nice scenery though when we could face looking over the side

100705_450d_img_6432

and there’s a few new zealand fur seals (or something) here

100705_450d_img_6447

as we headed in to shore the clouds started to gather

100705_450d_img_6450

but the sickness of the sky offset the sickness of esther and all was well by the time we landed

100705_450d_img_6453

on the way back to our holiday house we stopped at a cheese shop then again at the top of this hill

100705_450d_img_6456

just like the view from the top of the gondola, this too is an extinct volcano hole

100705_450d_img_6458

100705_450d_img_6461

100705_450d_img_6464

100705_450d_img_6465

here’s the blurby (as they say) if you want to know more

100705_450d_img_6467

and here’s how they deliver the post out in the sticks.  the post lady is eating a pie
