walking and eating

lately our usual saturday routine is to get up a later than week days, spend a couple of hours messing about whlist cleaning the house and getting a bit tetchy with each other (especially in the final 30 minutes) then heading out for the rest of the day.  today was no exception

our destination today though was the dome valley which i’d been keen to go to for months.

we started with morning tea in a cafe and a game of chinese chequers (which i won).

hey guys muddy boots outside please

110514_s95_img_3640

we walked to the lookout which was 40 minutes up hill.  this was halfway.

when we got to the lookout there was a maori chap there who told us about various wildlife and its meaning for maori people.  he was just a chap on a walk, and he had an amazing face covered in tattoos, so it was nice talking to him so we could look at his tatts without appearing rude!

there was a geocache under where we stood to take these pictures, but we couldn’t get to it because of the various people around

110514_s95_img_3654

so instead we headed back

110514_s95_img_3656

we recorded various bits of video on the way in the style of a documentary of new zealand we’ve been watching as a family.  no idea how it’s come out

110514_s95_img_3658

once we got back to the cafe we had our picnic in a cafe park at the side of the busy motorway, actually did manage to find a different geocache then drove back a long way via state highway 16

we stopped to admire the view at one point.  quite amazing

this is the big harbour to the north west of us

we had about 30 minutes when we got home before we went out again for a fish and chips suppa / open evening for Mainly Music where jane helps out

all the young kids brought their mums and dads along for some eating, chatting and a demonstration lesson

then after that we went straight to janine and jame’s house for a church ‘dinners at eight’ although there were only six of us.  the girls came with us and played in the other room with their friend there so we didn’t even need a babysitter.

the weather forecast says we’re in for some shocking weather over the next few days as autumn starts to finally kick in.  should be fun

You seem to get a massive portion of chips in your fish & chip suppers !!! Also, the cake looks wonderful. Have you put on weight since emigrating because the food looks superb.

i think there were a few portions – possibly three in that big pile. and yes, i think i have put a bit of weight on. that’s to be expected where the national dish is pie!
