we drove 45 minutes up north this morning to catch the royail mail post boat to kawau island.  jane was felling the cold

here’s a weka.  that’s an endangered new zealand bird.  there were loads all over the place

the island used to have a copper mine and smelting place.

the green in the cave and the rock on the beach in the picture below are from the copper

we did some walking

had a walk round the historic homestead

we also saw the dolphins and esther and i saw a penguin.  there are wallabies on the island but we didn’t see any of them today

then this evening we went to a friend’s pool warming party.  the pool was cold so not many people went in.

    I’m intrigued by the large decaying metal object on the right of the 6th photo, (the one showing the green copper ore on the beach). It looks as though it could be an abandoned steam locomotive boiler and possibly of considerable historic interest. I’m probably miles wide of the mark – did you get any info? Looks like a fascinating area.

    hi alan. i think it’s the pumping engine for dewatering the works. There’s more info here (see ‘start of mining’)

      Thanks for the info and the link Dave. Sounds like the pumping engine would make a nice model engineering project – maybe I’d better come over and take a closer look!
