i had breakfast with russell yesterday before i went to a conference. here he is looking at a photo he took of me taking a photo.

this bingo hall looked so fantastic
i even went in to see if i could play. the woman behind the counter thought i was mad and looked a bit suspicious as i was wearing my big camera.
in the end i didn't play as i would have had to be in there for 2 hours. and i thought that on my own the fun might run out after 10 mins. now, if i'd taken you all with me it would have been much more fun !

i walked past this yesterday and noticed she's been replaced with a plastic 80s disaster which is a shame. this photo was from september but i never got round to posting it.
the strange things on her belly are to stop pigeons landing on it. works for beer bellies too apparently.

absolutely ages ago, our friend gill gave me this passport photo she found and stuck on her fridge for my davescollections website. i daren't update that website at the moment for fear of breaking it (like funkypancake) so it'll just have to be here for now.

one minute this man was walking along with some young people. the next he ran off to the side and dangled from this tree. people can't help themselves can they.
london at its best
this chap in the parker was acting very randomly by the horse guard near, er, horseguard's parade. the poor guard was looking a bit freaked out.
luckily mr parker had brought a selection of old lady shopping trollies with him. it took me back to my younger days when i would do something like this for hours on end for no apparent reason. oh happy days.

this shop sells price less shoes which is bound to cause some customer confusion. i assume the shoes aren't free, just not marked up properly. "how much are these" would be a common cry.

nearly empty
after a year and a quarter of car commuting i think i consider it my main method of transport which is a real shame as i'm a dedicated walker. according to my statistics i walk on average 63km / week.
last week was a particularly car intensive week and i only walked 24km which is the lowest since i started recording my walking distances every day on the 2nd February 2004. Since then i've walked 15,460,260km.
anyway, i don't like filling my car up with petrol as it's a waste of time. my car has one of those displays that tells you how far you've got left petrol-wise. mine said i had 50 miles to go on monday morning and seeing as my commute was less than 30 miles, and there was a petrol station near my office, i thought i'd be ok. but i hadn't allowed for the fact that the display may lie.
so as i drove my 30 miles, the distance to empty meter dropped quicker and quicker, and when i got to the petrol station i only had 6 miles to go. i then spent over 50 of our earth pounds filling it back up again.
how exciting was that story ? funkypancake is getting more like a regular blog, and for that i can only apologise.

jane and i went out for a lovely meal at the rectory last night. we so rarely get to go out together so it was great. and the food was most excellent too.

this is a great sign at Heathrow airport - a place with lots of non English speakers.
Urinal is such a brilliant word, but i suspect it doesn't translate too well. i'm going to try and use it more often, particularly when visiting friends. "can i use your urinal" ?

belfast wheel
there's a big wheel in belfast which whizzed round faster than the london eye. to get the photo above i had to go nearly in to an office front door. i took a few photos then a security guard came along.
i thought "ooops", but he said would i like to come in a bit further to get a better photo and even asked the cleaning lady to hold one of the doors open for me !
it's a nice thing.

the freezing B&B
i stayed in a B&B the first night in belfast (at my own expense) so chose a well reviewed B&B. unfortunately it was freezing and i slept with my socks, pyjamas, a long sleeve t-shirt and a hat on ! breakfast was fantastic though.
whiskey
on my ireland day tour thing i visited the bushmills whiskey distillery. here's a hot toddie i had at the hotel later that evening.
here's my whiskey tasting whiskey. 12 year single malt (i think). very nice whatever it was. i learnt you need to have the first sip for your throat, the second sip for your mouth, then you can start enjoying the drink. add a bit of water too.

the giant's causeway
as you know, i went to belfast for a business meeting last week. i took a day's holiday when i was there to go on a bus tour of the north east coast. it was excellent. i met some really nice people and saw some fantastic sights
the highlight of the tour was the Giant's Causeway. we didn't get there until 4pm though unfortunately and it was getting dark. so we had a whistle stop tour. next time i'll take more time getting photos.
here's someone on the stones. the sea was amazing due to the storms (which also meant the flight home was a bit wobbly)

the worst rummikub hand ever ?
our lovely friends clive, heather and elaine came round yesterday for sunday lunch. later in the afternoon clive and heather played rummikub with esther and me.
to start in rummikub you need to make groups or runs of 30 points from the tiles in your hand. heather was having trouble getting to the 30 and as the game went on it was clear she had a bad hand. it was only when there were only two more tiles on the table to pick up that we realised quite how bad it was (and at that point i won).

i really like this shot. i had to kneel in the road to get it whilst cars were whizzing by. it's a bike horn on tottenham court road. that's goodge street tub station in the background behind the taxi. took a few shots to get this one right.
