i had breakfast with russell yesterday before i went to a conference.  here he is looking at a photo he took of me taking a photo.

071122_850_img_5798.jpg

and here's his polaroid pin hole of a don't walk on the grass sign

up to 100% in standard atmospheric pressure if i remember correctly.

071106_350d_img_6955.jpg

this bingo hall looked so fantastic

071106_350d_img_6946.jpg

i even went in to see if i could play.  the woman behind the counter thought i was mad and looked a bit suspicious as i was wearing my big camera.

071106_350d_img_6952.jpg

in the end i didn't play as i would have had to be in there for 2 hours.  and i thought that on my own the fun might run out after 10 mins.  now, if i'd taken you all with me it would have been much more fun !

poor chap.  he had everything to live for.  although his stance was often aggressive

070830_350d_img_3393.jpg

070527_350d_img_8558.jpg

we went to babbacome model village back in May (!) and i took loads of photos.

070527_350d_img_8486.jpg

so to celebrate the fact i've finally got round to posting them, here's a day dedicated to them

070527_350d_img_8487.jpg

the place is just amazing.  you could easily spend half a day there.

070527_350d_img_8488.jpg

it's just great !

070527_350d_img_8491.jpg

the attention to detail is spot on

070527_350d_img_8496.jpg

and there's always something to spot wherever you look like this car shop of movie cars

070527_350d_img_8500.jpg

through to natural blending in with created (real trees in the background in the distance)

070527_350d_img_8501.jpg

and annoying things like roadworks outside the holiday village

070527_350d_img_8502.jpg

or confused toilet visitors

070527_350d_img_8503.jpg

and nudists (that'll cause havoc with your google ads, sorry!)

070527_350d_img_8514.jpg

and who's this ?  it's hairy hat man, my favourite letter shaped character

070527_350d_img_8520.jpg

great to see a line of bollards

070527_350d_img_8521.jpg

and a traffic disaster

070527_350d_img_8523.jpg

the sense of humour even extends to the toilet sign (which was full sized - actually the sign and toilets were full sized)

070527_350d_img_8526.jpg

they were building an olympic stadium for 2012

070527_350d_img_8530.jpg

signage to hel

070527_350d_img_8531.jpg

and this brilliant load of runners containing various characters.

070527_350d_img_8534.jpg

and on the subject of comedy characters ...

070527_350d_img_8537.jpg

in the "world of favourite characters" they had this Matrix recreation which contained a no-dogs sign.

070527_350d_img_8539.jpg

what a brilliant place.  go and visit.  now.

070527_350d_img_8547.jpg

070901_350d_img_3579.jpg

we've all seen that doctor who episode and know what can happen

070918_850_img_5090.jpg

i walked past this yesterday and noticed she's been replaced with a plastic 80s disaster which is a shame.  this photo was from september but i never got round to posting it.

the strange things on her belly are to stop pigeons landing on it.  works for beer bellies too apparently.

absolutely ages ago, our friend gill gave me this passport photo she found and stuck on her fridge for my davescollections website.  i daren't update that website at the moment for fear of breaking it (like funkypancake) so it'll just have to be here for now.

071007_850_img_5373.jpg

071121_350d_img_8312.jpg

one minute this man was walking along with some young people.  the next he ran off to the side and dangled from this tree.  people can't help themselves can they.

071121_350d_img_8343 copy.jpg

this chap in the parker was acting very randomly by the horse guard near, er, horseguard's parade.  the poor guard was looking a bit freaked out.

071121_350d_img_8338.jpg

luckily mr parker had brought a selection of old lady shopping trollies with him.  it took me back to my younger days when i would do something like this for hours on end for no apparent reason.  oh happy days.

shorley sent me this classic no loo-ing sign from amsterdam.  excellent stuff.

ppamsterdam-1.jpg

brother edd sent me this.  very funky.  i think he's chopped his feet off though.

071117_350d_img_8036.jpg

this shop sells price less shoes which is bound to cause some customer confusion.  i assume the shoes aren't free, just not marked up properly.  "how much are these" would be a common cry.

071108_850_img_5679.jpg

071113_350d_img_7681.jpg

this would make a great sign for anyone's toilet

071117_350d_img_7874.jpg

after a year and a quarter of car commuting i think i consider it my main method of transport which is a real shame as i'm a dedicated walker.  according to my statistics i walk on average 63km / week.

last week was a particularly car intensive week and i only walked 24km which is the lowest since i started recording my walking distances every day on the 2nd February 2004.  Since then i've walked 15,460,260km.

anyway, i don't like filling my car up with petrol as it's a waste of time.  my car has one of those displays that tells you how far you've got left petrol-wise.  mine said i had 50 miles to go on monday morning and seeing as my commute was less than 30 miles, and there was a petrol station near my office, i thought i'd be ok.  but i hadn't allowed for the fact that the display may lie.

so as i drove my 30 miles, the distance to empty meter dropped quicker and quicker, and when i got to the petrol station i only had 6 miles to go.  i then spent over 50 of our earth pounds filling it back up again.

071119_850_img_5766.jpg

how exciting was that story ?  funkypancake is getting more like a regular blog, and for that i can only apologise.

071030_350d_img_6503.jpg

well done to exiles in ny for correctly identifying the sphinx thing (a sphinx says what?). they are next to cleopatra's needle

071108_850_img_5682.jpg 071108_850_img_5685.jpg

the irish people i met were proud of their drizzly windy weather so i assume these brollies were abandoned with glee

071118_850_img_5760.jpg

we've played a lot of rummikub this year.  it really is a classic game for all the family.  top xmas present tip for you perhaps ?

071107_850_img_5652.jpg

so we crossed over and had a good look.

071107_850_img_5653.jpg

we had a work outing to a carting track in london last night.  i chose to photo rather than drive.

071113_350d_img_7269.jpg

i've also been experimented with some post-processing in Adobe Lightroom

071113_350d_img_7573.jpg

Wadyafink ?  Is it ok for funkypancake to be fiddling so ?

071113_350d_img_7590.jpg

this is a great sign at Heathrow airport -  a place with lots of non English speakers.

071106_850_img_5603.jpg

Urinal is such a brilliant word, but i suspect it doesn't translate too well.  i'm going to try and use it more often, particularly when visiting friends.  "can i use your urinal" ?

071106_350d_img_6939.jpg

there's a big wheel in belfast which whizzed round faster than the london eye. to get the photo above i had to go nearly in to an office front door.  i took a few photos then a security guard came along.

i thought "ooops", but he said would i like to come in a bit further to get a better photo and even asked the cleaning lady to hold one of the doors open for me !

071106_350d_img_6918.jpg

it's a nice thing.

071106_350d_img_6891.jpg

i stayed in a B&B the first night in belfast (at my own expense) so chose a well reviewed B&B.  unfortunately it was freezing and i slept with my socks, pyjamas, a long sleeve t-shirt and a hat on !  breakfast was fantastic though.

071111_850_img_5698.jpg

071107_350d_img_7050.jpg

on my ireland day tour thing i visited the bushmills whiskey distillery.  here's a hot toddie i had at the hotel later that evening.

071107_850_img_5667.jpg

here's my whiskey tasting whiskey.  12 year single malt (i think).  very nice whatever it was.  i learnt you need to have the first sip for your throat, the second sip for your mouth, then you can start enjoying the drink.  add a bit of water too.

071107_850_img_5658.jpg

finally, i couldn't resist taking a photo of this no photos sign.

071107_850_img_5656.jpg

071111_850_img_5703.jpg

remember jane, esther and me went to see Are You Smarter Than A 10 Year Old ?  Well, the episodes we were on are now showing.  we were on the end part of last Sunday's one and should be on all of this coming week's episode and the one after.  You can play online here

071111_850_img_5700.jpg

jane is very clear (especially if you've got HD apparently).  and i only turn up if the contestants move out the way !

071111_850_img_5702.jpg

(by the way, i edited the picture above so you can see me - it doesn't appear like this in the real show.  although that would make a nice 'red button' feature).

finally, some of you will know i work for the company that shows this program (clue on the screen).  I've got some half price staff offers for friends and family if you haven't already got our method of watching TV (and another upgrade offer for someone who has).  if you are interested let me know asap.  deadline is 16th Nov so be quick !

071107_350d_img_7061.jpg

as you know, i went to belfast for a business meeting last week.  i took a day's holiday when i was there to go on a bus tour of the north east coast.  it was excellent.  i met some really nice people and saw some fantastic sights

071107_350d_img_7071.jpg

the highlight of the tour was the Giant's Causeway.  we didn't get there until 4pm though unfortunately and it was getting dark.  so we had a whistle stop tour.  next time i'll take more time getting photos.

071107_350d_img_7076.jpg

here's someone on the stones.  the sea was amazing due to the storms (which also meant the flight home was a bit wobbly)

071107_350d_img_7080.jpg

here's a classic picture of the hexagonal stones and strangeness on the horizon in the distance

071107_350d_img_7084.jpg

071107_350d_img_7086.jpg

071107_350d_img_7089.jpg

071107_350d_img_7090.jpg

071107_350d_img_7093.jpg

this is the giant's boot (i think)

071107_350d_img_7097.jpg

there was lots of scummy foam stuff. i converted this one to black and white to make it look nicer.

071107_350d_img_7104.jpg

very complicated diagram of where to walk.  the path down looks quite steep on the sign.

071107_350d_img_7106.jpg

this is the giant's organ.

071107_350d_img_7108.jpg

if i'd thought about it i would have got someone to stand in front of it to give you some scale.  but i didn't cuz it was dark and we were running out of time.

071107_350d_img_7113.jpg

apparently C S Lewis was inspired by the countryside of northern ireland and it may have influenced his narnia stories.

071107_350d_img_7125.jpg

quite amazing stuff.  i shal be going back some day !

these were from an animal place we went to a month ago.  i asked esther if she could think of an alternative meaning for this sign and she thought it probably meant they smashed a bit of the the outside of animals fur off for security.

our lovely friends clive, heather and elaine came round yesterday for sunday lunch.  later in the afternoon clive and heather played rummikub with esther and me.

to start in rummikub you need to make groups or runs of 30 points from the tiles in your hand.  heather was having trouble getting to the 30 and as the game went on it was clear she had a bad hand.  it was only when there were only two more tiles on the table to pick up that we realised quite how bad it was (and at that point i won).

Is this the worst rummikub hand ever ?

the weather recently has been fantastic.  this abandoned umbrella in the sun sums it up nicely like.

i was trying to think of a pun around the word 'motion'.  something like 'this isn't much good if you suffer from motion sickness'.  dunno.  can you do better ?

by the way, it should now be easier to leave comments, although you might have to re-register.  have a go and let me know how you get on.

i really like this shot.  i had to kneel in the road to get it whilst cars were whizzing by.  it's a bike horn on tottenham court road.  that's goodge street tub station in the background behind the taxi.  took a few shots to get this one right.

i'm so used to writting up the details for my Open University course i nearly went in to a spiel about choice of ISO and shutter speed.  see how much boredom i've saved you !

i usually draw the line at going through rubbish, but this pile of spilt bin liner contained so many goodies !  here is a photo (i picked it up but it was smeared with something very unpleasant so i put it down again then worried i'd caught a horrible disease!)
