this is the speed control on the HMS Warrior. It features the speed 'Faster' in 4 places which is interesting. Especially, as surely sometimes 'faster' will actually be 'slower'. or perhaps it never slowed down ?

i was taking a picture of these CDs in garden and they blew round to reveal they were from a photography magazine. they weren't very effective though as the picture i took isn't great and the vegetables had been majorly munched by moluscs.
big eye invited us round for lunch last sunday and it was very marvellous. here he is grinding something for the rice pudding.
and here he is advertising beans sonically.
this looks more like a speech bubble than a diversion sign. but what a beauty.

here's a little hedge on a grave. very strange.
there's kitchen fresh soup. and then there's guest soup. which suggests that the guest soup isn't fresh. or is made from, rather than for, the guests.

we had a great day in portsmouth yesterday. we started by going up spinnaker tower, then we went to hms warrior (see in the foreground here) and hms victory which is near the middle.
there's plenty more photos to come and we'll definitely be going again to see the rest of the stuff we didn't have time for on this trip.
spinnaker tower has a section which is a glass floor so you can look straight down. here are some pictures taken by kezia i think
as regular readers will know, i now work in the 'burbs rather than down town london (quite near to Heathrow, so give me a wave out the window as you're coming down). this photo is taken in the middle of 6 lanes of the A4 with cars whizzing by each side. just so you know the lengths i go to get you some photos !

unberleevably, i wandered through china town for the first time last week. i don't normally do west to east at that latitude. or perhaps i just didn't notice before as it wasn't covered in paper balloons.

we went to the warburg nature reserve yesterday and it's lovely
as with all good walks in a wood the girls ended up carrying huge sticks for no apparent reason.
very pointed out we'd seen lots of natures (plural) that day. and we had. including: a dead rat (on the road) and squirrels (dead and alive), various little birds, lots of red kites, a herd of stampeding deer in the wood, rabbits and probably other things i forgot.
saturday we went to prism of praise with musical people from church. it's good to go to conferences which are nothing to do with work. this one was about how to make church music cool.
it was also Richard Drummer's birthday so we sang and caked him over lunch
he was very pleased. i think.
did you know the millenium (or is that milenium or milennium or millennium) bridge, usually referred to as the wobbly bridge is closed all week ?

spring sprung this week. on thursday people were sitting out having their lunch all over london and it was great. here are two people eating noodles with st paul's in the background

i get a lot of emails asking how i manage to take such exquisite photos of gloves. so in the best spirit of photo sites such as strobist, here's a picture showing how i do it.
from the shadow you can see that i simply hold my camera and point it at the thing i'm trying to photo.
on saturday we went for a walk with our friends to the vyne.

it was very nice, although tony and i held everyone up by walking slowly and taking photos.
big eye won a family game of rummy cub and celebrated in style
i'm currently doing a short nightschool course on studio portrait photography with Tony (not big eye). it's very good, and has revealed i'm essentially clueless on proper photography !
i was quite pleased with the photo above though, and the one below isn't bad. the subject is another chap on the course.

here's the latest on tony's loo. he's now replumbed the basin and the bath so it drops water on people coming through the front door.
an english's man house is castle, so it makes sense to revive some of the ancient traditions i suppose.
