  • paihia day 3 – cape reigna (men’s business)

    110104_s95_img_1123

Andrew and I booked to go on a coach tour to the tip of new zealand on day 3.  it was a 12 hour bus jaunt so we didn’t think the kids would be up to it

    110104_450d_img_0756

the first thing of the day was dune boarding down these massive natural dunes

    110104_450d_img_0766

i decided to take photos rather than hurtle myself down the hill, but andrew was game

    110104_450d_img_0791

    110104_450d_img_0821

    110104_450d_img_0828

    110104_450d_img_0832

    he got a bit sandy

    110104_450d_img_0836

    110104_450d_img_0838

it was a backpackers tour so we had a completely hyperactive bus driver kiwi chap

    110104_450d_img_0776

here he is doing his second sand boarding trip (whizzing across the river bed which is also a designated road)

    110104_s95_img_1118

here he is running around the bus in bare feet opening a gate to let us in to a bit of forest we probably shouldn’t have been driving through

    110104_s95_img_1141

and here he is body boarding at a beach later in the day.  the bus driving was just an excuse to have big fun

    110104_100_img_1842

we made it up to the northern most tip of new zealand which is cape reigna

    110104_100_img_1845

it was busy with tourist which is a novelty for us as we haven’t really seen masses of people like this since we were in england !

    110104_100_img_1846

    here’s the famous sign post

    110104_100_img_1856

    110104_100_img_1867

    110104_450d_img_0844

    110104_450d_img_0874

    110104_450d_img_0881

(here’s where the tasman sea meets the pacific)

    110104_450d_img_0883

    110104_450d_img_0910

then in the afternoon we whizzed along 90 mile beach at 100km/hour

    110104_100_img_1888

like the river which feeds it, 90 mile beach is a designated road (although it disappears under water except a couple of hours each side of low tide)

    110104_100_img_1891

    110104_100_img_1893

we stopped at one point to have a wander

    110104_450d_img_0926

    110104_450d_img_0931

so, all in all a great day out !

    110104_450d_img_0946

meanwhile the ladies did some diary writing, relaxing up, swimming and visiting a beach not too far from where we were at one point

    110103_d50_dsc_0892

    110103_d50_dsc_0893

here are some sugar sachets with wise words on them

    110103_s95_img_1114

  • the real monday

    110110_s95_img_1414

it was back to work for me today which was a shame

    110110_s95_img_1422

but i got to have my daily walk by the viaduct so that was nice

    110110_s95_img_1423

meanwhile andrew went to tiritiri matangi and had a good time (our photos from when we went last year here)

    110110_s95_img_1424

meanwhile the ladies drove down to Rotorua for two nights downs there.  i’ll let them fill you in with the details when they are back

    110110_s95_img_1430

i met andrew after work and we then picked up our neighbour Warren and drove up an extinct (or perhaps dormant) volcano called Mount Victoria

    110110_s95_img_1436

there was a great view from there.  and some nice mushroomy things

    110110_s95_img_1442

    110110_s95_img_1449

then we headed in to Devonport for a meal

    110110_s95_img_1453

and drove back just as sunset was brewing, so stopped for some pictures

    110110_s95_img_1457

    that’s all !

    110110_s95_img_1459

  • the real sunday

    110109_850_img_4267

we’d only got two ‘free’ days with our visitors left (jane and the ladies are heading down to rotorua tomorrow for a couple of days), so we decided to make full use of our wet suits by heading up to tawharanui.

    110108_100_img_1945

i’ve mentioned tawharanui loads of times here as it’s our favourite beach

    110109_850_img_4228

the wind was quite strong today so there were some decent waves

    110109_850_img_4235

    swellmap.com said they’d be

    110109_850_img_4236

    110109_850_img_4237

    110109_850_img_4245

it were a bit messy out there …

    110109_850_img_4253

despite it being really busy with surfers and boogie boarders there was plenty of space on the beach

    110109_850_img_4260

we took it in turns to watch (and play with) the kids in the sea

    110108_100_img_1958

i read the paper oblivious to the naked ladies behind me it seems (photo by julie!)

    110108_100_img_1966

the littlies made sandcastles when not in the sea

    110109_100_img_1981

when we got back katie kindly hosed the cars down as they were both covered in sand and dust from the metal (gravel) road to get to the beach

    110108_d50_dsc_1144

here’s yesterday’s dinner and outside eating in case you were wondering

    110108_d50_dsc_1145

and here’s where all the photo magic happens

    110108_d50_dsc_1139

    110108_d50_dsc_1140

thanks again for julie and andrew’s photos (i don’t usually have many pictures of me, so i hope you notice i’ve included a few today!)

    110109_850_img_4266

    what a lovely day.

    110109_850_img_4269

back to work for me tomorrow 🙁

  • paihia day 2 – russell

    110103_s95_img_1040

on our second day we caught the passenger ferry across to the town across the bay called Russell

    110103_s95_img_0919

whilst people were getting organised, i popped down town to buy some coffees and a newspaper

    110103_s95_img_0923

    110103_s95_img_0920

and got to see a very nice red tree

    110103_s95_img_0922

    110103_s95_img_0926

here’s a big stingray floating about by the wharf

    110103_s95_img_0929

the boat trip was very pleasant

    110103_s95_img_0937

we took katie with us and met andrew, julie and olivia there a little later and we ate ice creams

    110103_100_img_1766

    110103_s95_img_0942

the port of russell is very nice.  it was once new zealand’s capital (or a place nearby it was)

    110103_s95_img_0943

    110103_s95_img_0944

i then forced everyone to walk up a big hill with a great view to find some geocaches

    110103_100_img_1783

we were rewarded with this great view of Long Beach which we went down to explore

    110103_100_img_1786

    110103_100_img_1790

    110103_s95_img_0950

    we visited NZ’s oldest church

    110103_s95_img_0952

    which had some great hassocks

    110103_s95_img_0959

    110103_s95_img_0981

    110103_s95_img_1010

    110103_s95_img_1018

     110103_s95_img_1031

    110103_s95_img_1034

    here’s the beach

    110103_s95_img_1044

there wasn’t much shade on the beach, but even where people made their own shade they didn’t use it properly

    110103_s95_img_1045

jane helped olivia make some sand sculptures

    110103_s95_img_1051

    110103_s95_img_1054

then julie took olivia and kezia back to get the boat to our holiday apartments whilst the rest of us walked up an even bigger hill

    110103_s95_img_1067

    110103_s95_img_1084

    110103_s95_img_1087

we took a longer route to get to the summit via a bush path

     110103_100_img_1797

here’s a new zealand cicada (should have mentioned quite a few of these pictures are andrew’s including the one above)

here’s a video of it chirping and clicking

    110103_s95_img_1093

here’s the view from the top which was noice

    110103_s95_img_1098

    110103_s95_img_1109

when we got back to the wharf there was some swordfish weighing going on

    110103_s95_img_1111

the one above looked a little peeved to have his sword tied up

    110103_s95_img_1112

then we caught the boat back over to piahia and all was good with the world

    110103_450d_img_0710

    110103_450d_img_0712

    110103_450d_img_0703

  • paihia day 1 – the arrival and familiarisation with our surroundings

    110101_100_img_1747

so, last satuday we all got up a bit earlier than normal and drove up to Paihia to begin our week away

    110101_100_img_1741

we stopped half way for morning tea in a cafe and to check the map

    110101_100_img_1746

which was a nice opportunity for olivia to show off her lovely shawl, hat and sunglasses

    110102_100_img_1754

we also stopped off at the hundertwasser toilets in kawakawa

    110102_s95_img_0887

kezia had done a school project on hundertwasser a few years ago in the UK so was delighted to find this, his final architectural creation

    110102_s95_img_0890

    110102_s95_img_0891

    110102_s95_img_0893

luckily this is one toilet location where you don’t get arrested for taking photos

    110102_s95_img_0894

i felt quite at home with the speacial spelling in kawakawa

    110102_s95_img_0878

we made good time so when we arrived in paihia we were able to have a swim in the motel pool and suss out the local eateries

    110102_s95_img_0902

    110102_s95_img_0903

and we did a spot of geocaching in the local graveyard

    110102_s95_img_0909

our two families had adjacent flats which shared a landing which made for nice friends together friendliness !

    110102_d50_dsc_0889

eventually it went dark and that was the end of the first day

  • gone to the beach …

    110101_850_img_4219_thumb

we’re off to paihia for the week.  normal service will be resumed upon our return

    101226_s95_img_0708

  • new year’s day

    110101_850_img_4179

we stayed at the party until around 10.30pm then headed home as we were variously tired

    110101_850_img_4216

then we were up early this morning to spend the day at mahurangi beach with friends from church

    101231_100_img_1695

we were the first to arrive so grabbed some shady space near the beach front and within a few minutes the rest of the gang had turned up

    101231_100_img_1701

one family brought to kayaks along and the kids spent most of the day in the sea bobbing about

    110101_100_img_1707

    110101_100_img_1719

occasionally the adults were allowed to sneak out and go for a walk to admire the views

    110101_100_img_1723

    110101_100_img_1733

    110101_850_img_4174

    110101_850_img_4175

    110101_850_img_4149

    110101_850_img_4177

    110101_850_img_4182

but the most part of the day was spent supervising the swimmers and chatting with friends

    110101_850_img_4157

    110101_850_img_4187

    110101_850_img_4191

    110101_850_img_4198

    and swimming with ducks

    110101_850_img_4199

    110101_850_img_4202

    110101_850_img_4217

we left late afternoon to get home for tea and packing as we’re off up north tomorrow for a week.  normal service will be resumed upon our return !

  • what the boys did

andrew and i went to muriwai for a big stomping walk and a gander at the gannets.

then we had lunch in beesonline.  then coffee in helensville. then ice cream at charlie’s. then drove back down the coast

lots of driving, but lots of fun

  • sky tower and the rainforest

    101230_450d_img_0620

the day started off with some diary admin from the shorter members of the household who wrote their diaries

    101229_100_img_1628

then we headed in to town to go up the sky tower.  here’s a load of pictures:
