cyclists and pedestrians are often at odds.  as seen here in these conflicting signs

080929_850_img_1201.jpg

these signs are on the side of the canal near my office.  to read the writing on the white stickers you have to stand on the canal-side of the footpath and crouch down to read the small writing ...

and the answer is ...

a patio heater thing (well done matt!)

http://www.funkypancake.com/blog/stuff3/2006/05/DSC09788-thumb.jpg

in fact they weren't tickets at all. they were stickers warning bike owners to secure their bikes more securely !

i like this picture. i think it's the directness and pointyness of the sign. click for the big version and make it your desktop (or something)

what if you are a cyclist and happen to be walking that day. can you still use the footpath ? they need an FAQ for signs like this.

http://www.funkypancake.com/blog/stuff3/2006/04/IMG_9520-thumb.jpg

andy sent me this photo he took at a wedding. i think it's fantastic. it's even got a bike sign in the background !

http://www.funkypancake.com/blog/stuff3/2006/04/andy_DSCF0785-thumb.jpg

i think i've mentioned before that they often get dignitaries in to open buildings, but i've not heard of them coming along to close anything.

today the queen went to the BBC to open their new building. And as a result they closed the bike parking, so the queen does close things after all !

http://www.funkypancake.com/blog/stuff3/2006/04/DSC09396-thumb.jpg

i like how they've over-dubbed the original sign on this too.

we went for a family outing to the Cotswold Wildlife Park yesterday and it was very good.

i knew it would be good when i saw this sign, which covers so many different categories and includes the word 'poop' ! Expect lots of pictures of animals over the next few days.

this is a great sign medley. you've got a long sausage dog at the top (rarely seen in dog signs), a cigarette sign the wrong way up (unless the smoke is being blown downwards by an over head fan and a rather compact no bikes sign.

all good stuff.

i used to think walking was a relaxing activity. but it's not. party i think because i move at speed. and most other people don't. and my speed is generally constant and other people's aren't.

bikes on pavements are a very annoying thing. almost as annoying as nearly being run over on zebra crossings i find very vexatious. is that a word ?

http://www.funkypancake.com/blog/stuff3/2005/10/DSC05247-thumb.jpg

my colleague harry came rushing in to my office yesterday lunchtime saying he'd spotted these excellent signs. i followed his instructions and found them. they are indeed magnificent.

all we ever see is 'no bike' signs. so here's one which tells you to lock up your bike. oh the difficulties of modern life.

here's a photo i took in mid June. just got round to posting it !

my 'no bikes' category has evolved in to any sign with a bike on. so here's one with fancy handlebars

this is a very strange sign. inspect in more detail and we see the cyclist has only one arm, no feet and is cycling up a river.

this reminds me of one of those 'ages of man' evolution posters.

DSC07880.jpg

ab-DSC00009.jpg

you might have heard about the diana memorial garden ? it's been a bit of a classic - originally a nice idea but went all a bit wrong when people slipped in the water channel. oh well

it's actually looking very nice now

and see how many categories i can put it in: no dogs, no cycles, people, royalty and slippery floor

worth clicking to inspect his one, sent by Andrew. he remarks on the punctionation and spacing. it reads like a poem.

no padlocks. tape and combination locks are fine

DSC00636.jpg

it's nice to see a chained bike occasionally. so here's one to make up for all the no bike signs

DSC09823.jpg

ab-DSC00002.jpg

have you visited www.bikeoff.org ? i hadn't.

DSC08161.jpg

DSC06855.jpg

there's no cycling on the (very) high street, no bikes and two sort of dog signs. what a double category winner - it's got dogs and bikes !

DSC08796.jpg

if you want to cycle through this door you'll have to get off your bike first !

how's this for an extreme bike sign. it's outside Chelsea Barracks, and as i took it various soldiers were doing their marching and standing still thing.

i've decided to formalise the bike signs and set up their own category. if i have time i'll go back through the archives and recategorise some old pictures.

here are a few signs i pass every morning to get us started. There's usually a way round most of these signs.

for example, in this case, you just need to hide your bike. if they can't find it, they won't remove it:
DSC06366.jpg

here is a no bikes sign with a long explanation (including the threat of having your bike towed away!):
DSC06378.jpg

and here is a very short sign:
DSC06402.jpg

we're not in to carrying weapons of personal destruction about in the UK. it's considered a bit 'off' to carry a real gun or mace for example.

however, are police advising cyclists to purchase electrified bike chains ?

if so the warning should be to the thieves not the bike owners.
