i get a lot of emails asking how i manage to take such exquisite photos of gloves. so in the best spirit of photo sites such as strobist, here's a picture showing how i do it.
from the shadow you can see that i simply hold my camera and point it at the thing i'm trying to photo.
on new year's day we went for a family walk and spotted a glove. nothing unusual there.
![]()
but then my mother in law picked it up and put it on. she'd forgotten one of her own gloves you see.
![]()
and so we continued on our walk (here's thomas, sil binky and kezia)
![]()
it was a there-and-back walk and when we got back to the point where found the glove, my mother in law looked for a place to put the glove so the owner would find it.
![]()
my father in law suggested the sign post and was the only one who could reach it.
![]()
here he is looking very unsuspicious
![]()
so if this is your glove, you know where to find it. and thanks for the loan.
![]()
do you ever wonder where the old gloves go that i see and photograph. i don't.
but here's one we saw last week, but a week later. it's managed to climb up the hedge.
![]()
we had an obligatory family point at this one. even jane joined in (from a suitable distance)
![]()
(this one is for new reader ellen who wrote a short story of odd socks once and found me via the russel davies' always excellent blog)
i hadn't spotted many gloves for ages until yesterday when i saw loads.
here is one on the road approaching the Savoy Hotel (note the cars driving on the wrong side of the road as is their tradition outside the savoy). i nearly got run over taking this photo (click it to see the glove and the Savoy hotel properly)
here's a close up of the glove
and here are a load of gloves on the bank of the thames
and finally, here's one which might be a glove but might not be:
last week i got an email from Mange Tout saying he too had a glove photo website which you can view here. i notice he's found some other glove websites too !
here is one of kezia's gardening gloves (every 3 year old should have some). it was on our living room floor being illuminated through the window.
update: Desktop Sized picture here
i bumped in to a friend on the tube last week i hadn't seen for about 3 years. he's called al, but i call him alvin.
and then i saw him again randomly in paddington station a few days later.
on one of the times i saw him i also saw this glove

we're getting towards the end of the glove season in the UK right now, so here's a few i've been holding back.

i saw hundreds and hundreds of gloves whilst i was doing the london marathon, but i decided early on there was no point trying to get photos as i couldn't keep up with them without stopping (and causing trouble for those behind me).
but if you ever want a new jumper, gloves, hat or even a bum bag, then it's worth following a marathon course. it's full of discarded cardies.
here is a typical glove

esther and kezia's grandfather reporting a glove sighting near our holiday cottage. so my brother in law and i took our children in search of it.
we found two. and a muddy old hat.
cousing thomas and esther

kezia and esther and glove 1
cousin thomas and kezia and esther and glove 2

esther and kezia and the very muddy hat

as part of my marathon training i've been really trying to take photos without stopping.
this is quite a challenge as it requires a quick reaction when i see an object worth photoing.
so, i was very pleased with this glove which came out sharp enough to make a nice desktop background.
it's a long glove with short finger places.
i really hope this isn't a sock in disguise

nottingham is robin hood country. he robbed the rich to give to the poor. the same could be said for gloves.
perhaps.

thanks to brother in law kev for these pictures
these gloves were on display in a giant box outside london's design museum.

this glove looks the business for shifting 'business'.

my collection of glove sighting's aren't just lost gloves. here is a good example of some gloves which probably weren't lost, but are still worth photoing.
kezia spotted these when everyone else missed them. she's a true protege in the glove spotting department

black and white

i love it when categories collide. how about this. it's a glove on a dog sign.
we approached it by walking up a slippery icey field and just as it came in to sight the clouds parted and it was illuminated by the sun. as soon as i'd finished taking the photos it went back to being dark and dismal again !
how can people believe there is no god ?
i got an email yesterday from annie of www.lostglove.co.uk asking if she could link to my glove collection.
of course she can, and to thank her, you can go visit her collection too. whilst i go for the non-interventionist approach (ie capture them in their natural environment and leave them be), annie takes them home and cares for them (rather like i do when i find a passport photo).
As a result i don't think she's got many of the rather clinical medical ones i seem to spot round the back of hospitals !
www.lostglove.co.uk also links to other glove sites and this rather interesting article.
it's great weather for glove finding at the moment. here are a few i've found in the last few days:

jane and the girls went to nottingham earlier this week. as we learnt over christmas, nottingham is the centre for lost gloves and fancy dog signs (like this one).
it was therefore no surprise when they returned with these great dog signs:

and these gloves:

and here is kezia in Ikea with a glove:

is it right i get my children to point at gloves on the street ? they do seem to enjoy it.
take this find for example. esther spotted it and practically threw herself at it to be in the photo !
no gloves or children were harmed in the making of this photo (and esther didn't touch it!)

there were three gloves on my favourite glove-railings this morning.
compare to what i saw last time and you'll notice there's been a slight change. someone's taken the pair and replaced it with a faux-leather singular glove.
what we have here is an actual, modern, working glove exchange

gloves are particular tricky to take whilst walking at speed. my first attempt (on the left) was pittiful, but as the walk progressed my accuracy improved.

i took this photo of lots of red gloves through some railings and a security chap came up to me and said "what are you doing" ?
"taking pictures of these gloves" i said
"well, be careful" he said. "they are toxic"
as i began to walk away he said "that's why we thrown them in there".
so now we know. just don't stand too close to your screen, ok.

i walked down a small section of street this morning which had a number of gloves stuck on the railings, rather like last week's coke drinks.

and here's the one from last week which is still there. but it's now got a spider's web attached (or maybe it's spiderman's glove and the web has shot out from the glove) ?

there's different ways of taking photos of gloves. generally i go for the reportage approach and simply take them as they lie.
occasionally i like to indulge myself in a little creative photography to liven what can, occasionally, be a slightly mundane photographic subject.
so, here is a negative image of a glove on some railings:

and here is the same glove taken with a long exposure with the street panning out behind it:
it's not always easy to get photos of gloves. these two were in the middle of quite a busy road junction outside Paddington Station.
i had to pre-focus my camera and dodge traffic to get the second of these photos !
unless you know what you are doing, i urge you not to follow my example.

looks like a pair but they were seperated by a few metres down the street

the one on the right turned out to be esther's so i had to go back out in to the street and retrieve it (luckily it wasn't too far from our house)

here are the latest consignment on glove photos from brother (in law) kev.

what a way to celebrate the 200th glove ! it's one resting on the railings with the mannequin pis in the background.
i was so excited to see it i went off and bought myself some fingerless gloves from the glove seller round the corner.
hoorah for glove collecting and significant milestones.
had it not been for the eurostar disaster i wouldn't have seen this glove on the other side of Lille.

here are some gloves from brother-in-law kev:

and here is another glove:

here is a glove sent from brother kev. he's recently moved to Nottingham and can confirm that it's rich pickings up there.

i also got an email from Rebecca pointing me to these great sign photos:
here are two photos sent by me dear readers.
on the left are some humanoid state-side bollards sent from cheryl. she questioned whether these chaps were bollards since they were doing the same job.
my motto is "if it quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck" (unless it's a cunning cat trying to catch duck by impersonating them). so, yes. i think it's a bollard
on the right is a glove from nottingham sent by brother-in-law kev who has just moved up that way and likes sending me pictures of gloves

glove in luscious green grass.
luscious is a word which used to be used a lot by teenage girls (when i was a teenage boy). as in "that's so lush".
maybe they still do.
i also saw this rubber glove and its suspicious looking bag (which was empty)

UPDATE: Having not seen the word Lush for nearly 20 years, i saw it an hour after posting this picture. see hear (look sea)
look what i found in our local supermarket - it's a glove on a slippery-sign bollard

i thought i'd seen a nice purple glove in a plant pot this morning but it turned out to be these plants (with a spoon nestling in the background).
i was quite glad they were just plants as i was concerned that someone had stolen my new business plan, which is to create a line of knitted goods which have more than the usual set of parts.
i'm thinking of 6 (or more) fingered gloves. you'd still be able to wear them, you'd just have an extra finger hole available.
or what about a jumper with three arms ? Or trousers with three legs ?
is anyone willing to prototype any of the above for me ? i think we could be on to something with the 6 (or more) fingered gloves so perhaps we should start there.
i think this art-concept (for that is what it is my friends) needs a name. something along the lines of 'extra-digits' or 'more-of-the-same' but i'm sure you can help me here.
be great to get something in the shops before Christmas.

look at all these things spilling out around this bin.
there's a genuine roman plastic pillar:

gloves seen on the way home last night

we're in for a cold winter in the UK apparently. it's global warming (hey?). bad news for the environment, but great news for glove spotting.
it's not even really cold yet and here's a red glove in a black glove. this means someone has already started wearing twin-gloves.

it's a sign about gloves.

we spotted this glove on the way back from church but because we had visitors i couldn't walk down the street to photo it for you.
luckily zach was keen to track the glove down and provided the ideal excuse to go and photo it. so here is the glove. and here is zach.

these gloves might have been shoes. difficult to tell.
they obviously belonged to a teeny weeny baby. when you are that age your hands and shoes are interchangable anyway.

they can hide, but i'll always find them.

there were many gloves at Reading Festival and i couldn't hope to take pictures of them all because of the endless pushing crowds, so here are two blue ones that can represent the rest of the unphoto'd
