well, the exciting thing of the day is i’ve been chosen with a few other photographers to be part of an exhibition on the auckland waterfront next month.   The first workshop is next Tuesday evening so all very exciting stuff.  bit more info here: http://www.queens-wharf.co.nz/queenswharfphotographyexhibition/

    151006_IMG_9744

i had work.  jane spent the day cleaning the bathroom and walked the dog.  it was glorious she said (referring to the dog walk i think)

this evening jane and esther went to listen to some people talking about university courses at the local university open evening to give esther some ideas.

  • Russell – day 3part 3

    151003_IMG_3655

we got the ferry back to Russell after our 11 hour tour hand finished

    151003_IMG_9667

we went to our favourite restaurant for dinner to celebrate our 6 years since arriving in New Zealand on the 13th October 2009

    151003_IMG_9668

and then we went back to the bach.  jane went to bed and i forced myself to go outside and take some pictures of the stars with my new camera lens which i use for taking photos of concerts

    151003_IMG_3653

turns out its wide angle and low light capability are great for start photos!

    151003_IMG_3659

this tree was helpfully illuminated by a rare passing car at one point which was nice.

    151003_IMG_3693

  • russell –day 3 part 2

    151003_IMG_3438

after Cape Reigna we went back to near 90 mile beach to do some dune surfing

    151003_IMG_3440

here are way more photos than you’ll want to see

    151003_IMG_3437

    151003_IMG_3441

    151003_IMG_3447

    obligatory safety instructions

    151003_IMG_3448

    151003_IMG_3449

this lady was funny – despite very strict instructions that you couldn’t wear shoes and you should remove any lose items – she wore her boots, sunglasses and her handbag.

    151003_IMG_3454

so everyone climbed up the training slope

    151003_IMG_3462

    151003_IMG_3465

    here’s esther’s first run

    151003_IMG_3522

    151003_IMG_3563

after the dunes we went for a fish and chip lunch by a little inlet

    151003_IMG_3649

    151003_IMG_9653

and then went to a kauri museum/shop

    151003_IMG_9654

    and finally a kauri grove

    151003_IMG_9661

  • russell day 3 –part 1

    151003_IMG_3343

saturday was the day we caught the bus to cape reigna.  it was a full day with lots of photo opportunities so i’ll post it in two parts

    151003_IMG_9610

we left the holiday house at 6.40am to get the 7am ferry to paihia.  the coach was waiting for us when we got there just as the sun was rising.

    151003_IMG_9616

after a brief stop to buy some provisions (morning tea) we then headed on to 90 mile beach

    151003_IMG_3277

we’d chosen the saturday for the trip as we’d hoped the storm which blew through on friday night would have passed through.  unfortunately a few showers and lots of wind remained.

    151003_IMG_3284

it was quite busy on the beach (which is also a motorway)

    151003_IMG_3287

the westerly breeze was pushing the tide in so we could only drive for a short while down the beach

    151003_IMG_3288

    151003_IMG_3290

    151003_IMG_3291

    151003_IMG_3297

    151003_IMG_3298

    151003_IMG_3303

    we saw a dead dolphin

    151003_IMG_9648

    151003_IMG_3317

after 90 mile beach we drove up to Cape Reigna which is at the top of new zealand

    151003_IMG_3330

    it was hugely windy

    151003_IMG_3344

cloudy but not rainy, making it all rather dramatic

    151003_IMG_3345

    151003_IMG_3347

    151003_IMG_3348

    151003_IMG_3349

an asian lady took this photo of us.  we’re all laughing as the flash on my camera popped up slowly and lifted her hat up!

    151003_IMG_3353

    151003_IMG_3355

    151003_IMG_3365

    151003_IMG_3374

    151003_IMG_3386

    151003_IMG_3389

    151003_IMG_3398

    151003_IMG_3399

    151003_IMG_3401

    151003_IMG_3406

    151003_IMG_3411

    151003_IMG_3420

    151003_IMG_3426

on the way back to the bus esther worked out a neat way to keep her hair out of her face and her ears warm

    151003_IMG_3429

  • Russell–day 2

    151002_IMG_3047

the weather forecast for Friday afternoon was a bit rubbish but the morning was gorgeous

    151002_IMG_3048

this is the view from jane and my bedroom, and from the table where i sat outside for breakfast while jane went for a run

    151002_IMG_3052

while she was running i went for a walk round to the next bay so i could take some photos looking back to long beach where we were staying

    151002_IMG_3088

    151002_IMG_3090

you can see our holiday house in the picture above.  we’re the lower white house on the waterfront

    151002_IMG_3091-Pano

int he next bay there was a dotterel nesting.  it ran up to me as i walked on the beach

    151002_IMG_3107

i would have missed the scrappy nest had it not been for the four garden canes and sting and a little sign saying it was a nest

    151002_IMG_3123

these birds are so clever to mark their nests like that

    151002_IMG_3140

    151002_IMG_3148

    151002_IMG_3173

by mid morning the wind was starting to blow in so we walked in to Russell and got ferry across the harbour to Piahia

    151002_IMG_3176

    151002_IMG_3178

the girls found a little library

    151002_IMG_3191

and we had fish and chips / sushi sitting outside listening to some teenage buskers until it rained

    151002_IMG_3192

    151002_IMG_3194

we sat upstairs on the ferry on the way back as we were between rain showers

    151002_IMG_3196

    151002_IMG_3198

    151002_IMG_3200

    151002_IMG_3207

    151002_IMG_3211

but the wind was getting up and the bay was getting a bit squally

    151002_IMG_3215

    151002_IMG_3219

so when we were back in Russell we went to a french museum of a printing press thing which was set up by some Catholics to print maori things

    151002_IMG_3240

this bucket contained cow wee to soften leather

    151002_IMG_3242

the girls had a go on the print machine

    151002_IMG_3250

    151002_IMG_3256

    151002_IMG_3257

    151002_IMG_3260

then it was time for afternoon tea then back to the holiday house for dinner and board games and an early night as we were to be up early the next day.  you’ll have to wait for that installment

    151002_IMG_9599

  • russell – day 4 (today)

    151004_IMG_9670

so, after the rough weathers of day 2 and 3 (updates coming soon) everything was peace and calmful

    151004_IMG_9674

so we packed up and left

    151004_IMG_9676

    151004_IMG_9679

this is how close we were to the sea:

    151004_IMG_9677

we had a walk round russell up to flagstaff hill the scenic route and back again

    151004_IMG_3703

    151004_IMG_3718

    151004_IMG_3707

    151004_IMG_3723

    151004_IMG_3733

    151004_IMG_3751

    151004_IMG_3756

    151004_IMG_3763

after our walk we had morning tea next to the beach

    151004_IMG_9694

before starting the three hour drive home

    151004_IMG_3770

on the way back we stopped at the Dome Cafe for lunch and some puzzling

    151004_IMG_9697

we picked up pearl on the way back too and are now home and unpacked.
