I expect that's his effects pedal rack. Rather crafty the way he has hidden the workings so that nobody messes around with the settings.
My guitarist friend Howard is a great guitarist and loves effects but is a complete technophobe. (He hates rave music). This kind of simplistic effects pedal rack would appeal to him. Big friendly buttons that say things like "Loud", "Distort", "Big noise", "Wibble"...
