however, the theory is, that if you keep all other things consistent (shutter speed / ISO sensitivity) then you should be able to see the variance throughout the day by looking at the camera’s automatic aperture setting.

For a long time i walked to work between 7.30am and 8am.  As winter came i’d find that i needed to use an every higher ISO setting on my compact camera, until at that time of the morning it was actually dark and i’d be forced to brace my camera as it was no longer to handhold pictures even with the highest ISO settings.

I’ll add some pictures to this project in due course …

when i submitted my photos i put them in an order i thought would be attractive to view rather than bunched by the assignment categories which caused some extra work for my tutor unfortunately. So i’ve organised them by category instead below:

Complementary Colour

blue/orange. i could have moved to the top right corner of this photo and concentrated on the blue/yellow/greens to create a ‘similar colours’ shot [i agree, - my interest at the time were the abandoned shoes, rather than the assignment, but it’s a good reminder to me to look at different parts of the photos i’m taking to ensure i don’t miss the ‘biggerpicture’ (quite literally!) ]

this is a complex photo with red/blue dominating the front of the picture.  [This is not really the typical type of photo i product, and i’m not actually too keen on it !]

Similar Colours

This could be more of contrast between yellow and blue as even the greens are mostly yellow !  the nettles in the foreground make the picture

This might be better as an example of a colour accent than a similar colour.  the rain ‘filter’ on top of the roofs creates a delicate texture

My tutor noticed this photo was over sharpened in the large digital file.  i’ve tracked this down to the export function in Lightroom and in future i’ll disable this to prevent extra over-sharpening in the final conversion process.

These last three pictures, show different emotions / moods of yellow including the greenish tones in the tunnel, and orangey yellows in the flower.

This is also similar colours (yellow lines).

there’s a delightful series of posed photos in the foyer at the British Library at the moment. it shows various old-style shops in london from the 1970s and 1980s.  The photos are large prints with the subjects being the shop itself as well as the artists.  The photos are sensitively lit and all have dark vignette which gives the impression of looking down a (time)-tunnel.

i really liked this short exhibition (itself a subset of a larger exhibition which was held previously in the National Portrait Gallery) and it made me think about how to create a group of photos which look consistent even though they are of quite different subjects.  I was also impressed by unforced but deliberate posing of the shop workers, who are integral to each shot.

Shutting Up Shop

Explore the demise of the traditional local shop with this insightful photographic display of old-style London shops from the 1970s and 1980s taken by John Londei. These beautiful and moving large-scale photographs, taken with a 10"x8" plate camera, will be accompanied by recordings of interviews with some of the former owners for whom these shops were much more than just a business.

blue of the sky complements the orange of the sand.  shoes and people at thirds intersect.

purply/red dummy complements yellow of person's jumper (which the yellow lines lead to).  not sure if there's too much grey in the picture (although there's yellowy sand) ?

flowers are generally a bit boring so not sure about these.  also wonder if the yellow/red is to contrasty.  although there are yellows in there too.

lots of purple.  need to control colours better as the hands look a bit red, but like the quirkiness.  possibility i'll use this one.

necklace above converted to black and white.  all the colours look equally grey (although the green looks a little lighter than the others)

The issue seems to be the lack of pure colours on the necklace, especially the yellow

this is a row of houses on the front at tenby.  their bold colours come from all parts of the colour spectrum and with the blue sky this shows both warm and cold colours

this is a street scene viewed from a bridge in warsaw.  the slight green hue was deliberate to give a slightly faded photo effect.  the colours in the picture are cool greens, browns etc

these flowers are made of bold yellow and red colours which present a burst of warmth

Of these picture, the red buses seems to be the warmest, although red itself isn’t the warmest colour (that honour belongs to orange/yellow).  the yellow picture contains too much black and the colour isn’t pure enough to produce a bright image

Cool

This blue car looks the coolest, although the effect is offset by the defined shadows which reveal the photo was taken on a sunny day (implying warmth in the picture)

borderline warm/cool

Generally i don’t think these second set of photos are particularly good, but they demonstrate the principle.  i also think it’s a bit of a cop out using
