here are the final selection for assignment 1
still and moving
black and white
large and small
diagonal and straight

sweet and sour

high and low

straight and curved
continous and intermittent
hard and soft

diagonal and rounded in one

i found this assignment a lot harder than i expected. part of the problem is that i usually find photos as i go about my daily life, rather than deliberately taking photos to meet a particular brief. so in that respect it was new and challenging.
i also found the words quite difficult to work to as they were quite nebulous, particularly words like 'little'. on a few occasions i found i had one half of a pair of pictures, but was unable to find a worthy enough picture to complete the pair. eg i had a nice photo for transparent, but didn't have one for 'opaque'.
to help organise my thoughts and help shortlist the photos i created a table in a Word document with each of the words in a box with pairs in adjacent columns. this helped me see what photos i was missing and also helped me shortlist photos where there were multiple options for a particular word. laid out like this i could compare how pairs would work together.
