here's me in a bar in Wellington from a week or so back.  taken by my good friend eugene. not only is he a great guy, he also has a great name !

no one likes non-crushed apple cider with all those apples floating in your glass.  much better to crush them and get the juice out.

drinking responsibility means not drinking outside the shop.

super liquor is the shop name rather than a comment.

i find car drinks holders very satisfying.

it's not all lager louts and beer brutes in england.  we have alco-poptarts and cider-sliders too.  And occasionally posh winos too, as shown by these london street debris

this trolley was full of little bottles of pepsi.  i like abandoned trolleys, especially in the supermarket.  it's like you've caught the ghost of someone or something.

did the person who'd collected all these suddenly come to their senses and realise this wasn't a healthy and left the shop ?

081124_850_img_1806.jpg

this drink tasted like trousers.

kezia was delighted to be able to open her first can of fizzy pop all by her self.  here's her first solo pour.  life is full of firsts at her age.

081002_850_img_1215.jpg

my brother and i were sitting in a cafe in leicestershire the other week when he suddenly exclaimed 'oh, wow'.  i looked and had the same response.

i'd totally forgotten about Kirby and West milk floats and their yellow and blue livery.  it was suddenly like being old and young at the same time, with memories of chinking bottles and the fun on snowy days when these light weight electric vehicles couldn't get up a nearby hilly street.

makes you wonder what else we've forgotten.  i think the fear of forgetting is part of my obsessive archival of the mundane

we went to a fantastic dedication service and party yesterday and it was excellent.  everyone was much too trendy though, and jane and realised that we are definitely old.   which is a shame, but inevitable.

anyway, it's nice to see drinks with prices on.

what do you think about get your beer fruity.

i spotted this sign in possibly my new favourite cafe in finsbury square near the crown bowling green.

i thought i must have drunk too much when i started seeing the top of my beer turning in to a blobby cloud.  so i took a picture to check later, and it really did look like this.

071118_850_img_5760.jpg

071107_350d_img_7050.jpg

on my ireland day tour thing i visited the bushmills whiskey distillery.  here's a hot toddie i had at the hotel later that evening.

071107_850_img_5667.jpg

here's my whiskey tasting whiskey.  12 year single malt (i think).  very nice whatever it was.  i learnt you need to have the first sip for your throat, the second sip for your mouth, then you can start enjoying the drink.  add a bit of water too.

071107_850_img_5658.jpg

finally, i couldn't resist taking a photo of this no photos sign.

071107_850_img_5656.jpg

i love fetes. and i love tombolas the best. when you enter you kind of want to win,but also don't want to as the history of the bottles is often questionable. we've suspected some professional tombola wine bottles have been circulating for years - once one they are donated to the next tombola and so on.

070623_350d_img_9947.jpg

this is a fairly classic selection with all the usuals - ketchup, cola, cheap pop, strange wines etc.

070520_850_img_2573.jpg

it's amazing what alcohol can do to a person. this bollard has ended up being diverted by a can of stella.

and as if further evidence were needed, look at this:

guiness and lemonade don't mix. here is the proof. the lemonade (poured first) sat at the bottom and the guiness just floated around on top of it very nicely.

this is the label on Tesco lemonade. the picture shows someone throwing a lemon violently in to an already full glass of lemonade, thus spilling it everywhere. this 'serving suggestion' probably makes sense to tesco as you end up wasting the drink and having to buy more than you otherwise would have.

we went on a family picnic yesterday and it was excellent. the location, the weather, family etc. the only thing which nearly went wrong was when jane realised she'd forgotten the teabags. "don't worry", said my mum, "i've got one in my handbag".

how british is that ? that was definately one of those proud-to-be-my-mothers'-son moments.

esther went to a party yesterday afternoon so i had 2 hours free for wandering. so i went to a local vineyard (yes we have them in the England!) and had a beer. i had the place to myself as everyone else in the universe was watching football. fantastic stuff.

they were giving out these drinks in paddington station yesterday so i took one and put it in my bag. unfortunately the lid wasn't on properly and some spilt. which i don't think was part of their marketing plan.

esther went to a party yesterday afternoon so we took kezia for some ice-cream in pizza hut. she was very concerned that we knew that the pepsi didn't taste of tomato, even though there was a picture of it on the container.

for american readers, when i say tomato i actually mean tomato.

i thought a typical scottish drink would be lager and irn-bru. it wasn't. and now i understand why.

here is a sign of another culture. this drinks machine on a station concorse contains bottles of alcoholic snaps as well as the usual coke varients.

it also seems to contain cans of 'gusset' which i didn't spot at the time.

us brits like nothing more than a warm drink on a warm day. if it's not a warm cup of tea it's a nice warm beer.

but even i draw the line at deliberately heated beer.

(i actually like cold beer. in fact, brother-in-law kev often laughs at my putting of ales in the fridge, but i like it that way).

the hot drink machine in my office has a mysterious handwritten note on enquiring whether tomato soup is available 'off list' as a secret number.

i like the idea of finding hidden 'cheat' codes in the drinks machine that can dispense exciting drinks.

i always choose 83 mild for my mug of hot water. perhaps i should start trying a few other numbers and see what comes out.

the handwritten message in more detail:

i love sunny days. i spend most of them on the floor taking pictures of fruit and coke cans. but here's a malibu sunrise.

as you'll know, spring, of, as they call it in America, 'spring', has now sprung and it's officially, er, spring.

that means all sorts of things start popping up. flowers mostly.

but there's a few other things. we all know that mushrooms are the mushrooms of the food world, but what are the mushrooms of the drink world you ask ?

tea bags of course.

here are a crop of round ones (and a key):

as the famous song goes "there's nothing you can drink that can't drink" (or something).

this poor little can is thirsty but is too small to reach the top of the pub bench. i'm sure someone will take pity on him. he's got such a smiley mouth !
