little blue penguins

we went for a walk down a local beach at lunchtime and came across four little blue penguins

whilst there are plenty of these further out to sea, we rarely see them this close unless they are injured (or dead!)

and it turned these were rescue penguins enjoying some exercise in the actual sea

the two ladies were penguin carers and two of them (the penguins) are to be released tomorrow a bit further up the coast

there was something excellent about seeing them in the semi-wild like this rather than in a zoo or aquarium

soon enough it was time for them to go back in to their cat baskets

such fun

it's killing the fish

there are a couple of ages and weeks in the sign above which have been changed. interesting

public access walk in stream bed only

you get a different sort of mundane find whilst walking down a river near a beach in winter than i used to wandering through the streets of london on the way to work.

here i've found a towel on the black sand of a river west of Auckland. and rather than my usual shoes (which i like to include in these looking down shots) you've got my toes.

nothing like a public holiday to do something a little different.

so i put them in a special place where the loser might find them
