cake
i ate this cake at a meeting yesterday. it lead to a greasy cake stain on my notes. i left myself a note for the future so i'd know what it was.
someone important (probably)
i was on the way to a meeting with a lord (which was cancelled because he was summoned to the house of lords at the last minute.
on the way i spotted this cavalcade coming, so i got out my big camera and grabbed some shots
and then i enlarged the people ...
they came out of buckingham palace. i suspect the actual member of the royal family is in the car (at the top)
they certainly had nice hats, which is important for a carriage rider
and a nice purple wrap

although not everyone seemed to be enjoying it

a very funky pancake party
as had become traditional, jane's parents came over last night for our annual pancake party
esther made a sign.

and then we got down to the business
i create chaos by taking photos in continuous mode with my external flash on, causing blindness to anyone in the same room
jane's dad was particularly surprised by my approach and use it as an excuse to do a particularly elaborate setup
his throw was a great visual success. the picture below is the catch part of the manoeuvre. the throw bit is the picture at the top of this post

having got her eye in she then went for some more complicated shaped ones
we did actually eat them (but not me due to egg allergyness)

and of course jane did too.
one thing worth noting is the difference in our kitchen since we've had our extension. above is this year (now with extra space to the right). below is last year (viewed from the other way round)

focus on imaging
i went to the nec yesterday for the focus on imaging show. was jolly good. at one point i had to pretend (for modelling purposes) to be this lady's husband. that will explain any dubious images which appear on flickr etc.

man boobs
this is the picture on the front of the kids fun pack at tgi friday. upside down it looked like the chap surfing had rather large man boobs. they looked a little less extreme the other way up !
dessert
we've had quite a social few days - jane's sister and family stayed for a few days and last night we went to our god-daughter's birthday party at tgi friday. very good it was too
a walk in a wood
we went geocaching yesterday in a wood. we got a bit lost (missed a footpath turning), but found 6/9 and saw some great things. like this weird metal statue (click on the picture to see the word reflected in its globe).

just a street scene
sometimes it's nice to take photos of things which actually are boring, rather than boring things which are actually quite exciting.
a found photo
i absolutely love finding passport photos in the street. it's one of the biggest buzzes ever. look and you shall find. although they are becoming ever rarer in these digital days
murder in the aisles ?
if you were going to murder someone in tescos, i advise you to do it by the jars of beetroot, as no one will be bothered by the pool of blood. especially if you do it at my local tesco where it's more of a novelty to find a clean bit of floor. in fact, they'd probably scoop up the body and put it in the reduced goods area and sell it off cheap.
not that funkypancake in any way condones or encourages murdering, either in supermarkets, or outside them (or even in the entrance)
media breakfast
not entirely sure why there were a loads of bottles of beer next to the boxes of cereal in the work rest area on monday. the milk has often gone off at the weekend so perhaps someone had a more cunning idea for what to put on their corn flakes.
a token fury
this is very british. these people weren't properly furious, but they thought they should be so they did something which showed willing, but was a bit half hearted. just so they didn't upset anyone. you know.
the end of barbie head ?
poor old barbie head. once a beauty with beautiful hair, then a waif with dreadlocks, and now ... well, we don't know as she's not there any more. we'll need to do some more searching down the streets, but i fear the bin men 'moved' her in to their lorry.

some things are so good you just have to stand in front of them or 5 minutes taking photos of them. such as this. brilliant.

robyn hitchcock
jane and i went with some friends to see robyn hitchcock on saturday night. he's one of my favouritist musicians and it was a great show. watch a video here
it was a seated gig which i'm really in to these days. the music was still loud and manic though and a chap on our row was waving his legs wildly where he sat, making the whole row wobble. it was a bit like being in a mosh pit. only slightly less squashy.
robyn even popped out after the show to sign some albums. what a nice chap
the husband of the support act singer had a fine moustache / beard combo.

this is no way to treat chocolate - by the way, i'm back on the chocolate now. although nowhere near the level of previously and feeling much more in control of the situation !

long time funkypancake reader and life advisor Big Nose Ugly Guy sent me this picture of a shy Australian bollard (either called or in Sydney).

look at this sign. brings together brilliant random signage and religion. what a great idea.

we saw this sword in a ditch at the edge of a field. i wonder if it's medieval and has been washed up by the recent floods ?

esther's grade 2
esther passed her grade 2 violin exam a while ago with merit. she finally got her detailed report which reminded me to tell you. so there you go.
kezia won the prize for best disco dancer at her school disco last night. funky dancing is a family tradition, so i'm very proud of her too !
bored in a pink teeny cleaning van
it's been a long while since i spotted a new type of cleaning vehicle. so i was delighted with this pink spot

the illuminated bag
this yellow bag was illuminated by the sun which amazingly wasn't lighting anything else.
it took me quite a bit of effort to expose the photo correctly, and all these photos are pretty much straight out of the camera
as i stood for a couple of minutes photoing the bag and the pub behind it someone came out of the pub and got something out of the bag
that's all i had to tell you about the bag.

trees generally grow out of the ground, so the concept of low trees shouldn't be such a rare thing

my lovely wife jane
jane and i went out for a wedding anniversary meal yesterday and it was jolly good. it was a bit presumptuous as it's not our wedding anniversary for a few days, but i recon we can make it !
hassock of the week
i told you i found a really rich seam of hassocks at our friends church a fortnight ago. here's a great example. it's seemingly an exploding angel.

i liked hot the sun was at second floor level only. that's probably why these houses are triple story rather than the usual two.

barbie head update
esther went out in search of the barbie head yesterday evening with my camera and came back with these fantastic shots of barbie emerging from the ice. she was very pleased. and so was esther
when we got back later in the evening we tracked her down again and her whole head was revealed, although her hair was still trapped below. this picture was taken by torchlight
recycling friendship

our back lawn has been mostly untouched by human feet as everyone has been playing in the street. esther let herself out yesterday afternoon and ran round this bucket lots of times, just because. jolly good.
hail
it hailed the day before yesterday and it just stuck where it landed. my car looked like it was covered in the stuff you have on top of an apple crumble. what do they call that stuff ? also made the roads rather crunchy slidey. bit like skiing on rice crispies (in my experience)
off to school
we ended up with a really elaborate organisational scheme yesterday as jane had to leave for her school before the girls knew whether their school was going to be open. all was well in the end as i was able to work from home. it's these little moments of domestic unpredictability which make life such fun
tomato ketchup
we went to a restaurant for kezia's birthday yesterday. it was ok, but not great, although she had a good time ! the ketchup bottle had this rather fetching label on it.
out of control water fountain
i fiddled with this for ages to try to get it to stop. everyone walking by thought i'd started it off, but i hadn't. i was just trying to do the right thing. ho hum

the poor old barbie head
well, what with sunday's excitement of watching the poor barbie head making its way down the hill, we woke yesterday to find the street covered in deep snow. we went out to see if we could locate her, but this is as close as we got. the lump was actually a leaf
later in the day a group of yooves arrived and started a giant snow ball fight. no problem there except they were in the exact vicinity of the barbie head
luckily they didn't spot her, or if they did, they left her where she lay ("they wouldn't let it lie", except they did).
we went out about 5pm as it was getting dark and there she was in the now melting snow
kezia carefully kicked her over with her great big boots to reveal her still smiling face
we've expecting more snow and certainly freezing temperatures overnight, so we'll have to see how she fairs. her hair certainly isn't as nice as it once was

kezia saw some pictures of snowmen on the internet and said she wanted to take some, so she borrowed my camera to take some shots on the way to the supermarket with jane
she spotted some fantastic ones
sadly we didn't make any ourselves. but the girls spent most of the day 'sledging' which i suspect involved dragging each other on a piece of plastic over wet muddy grass.

i was working from home yesterday so didn't even attempt to drive to work. instead i sat at my desk from 5am working. but i did go outside with esther and kezia at about 7.30 for a wander around the untouched snow
barbie's head
on the way back from church yesterday i spotted this barbie head in the street. we nearly ran over it, but we didn't. however, it was in sight of our house so i went with the girls to check it out.
it was a well maintained barbie head. esther said she could tell it had been well looked after by the hair styling. she kept an eye on it all afternoon as it slowly made its way down the hill. she watched it through her binoculars from her bedroom window
kezia's party
kezia had her birthday party yesterday. quite loud at times, but generally excellent because some lady came in and did a couple of hours of activities. jane did the food and i just got in the way. like a proper dad should.
more tesco chaos
i've been thinking why i like this little corner of my local tesco so much. it's the chaos.
the thing i love about supermarkets in general is how they put all the stuff 'together' ie all the ketchups are in one area, fruit in another, an aisle of toilet rolls and so it goes. i love the repetition and the colours.
but i also love the unstructured corner that is the reduced goods area. it's a real pick and mix (rip woolworths). and i guess in these crunchy days, shops are trying to sell every last thing rather than chucking stuff away, so this area has been packed to overflowing recently with busted packets and split multipacks.
hassock of the week
great news by the way. found a fantastically reach seam of hassocks last week. both quality and quantity. should be enough to keep us going for another year !
bt tower
i spent most of yesterday looking at photos of BT tower for my course assignment. it's made my eyes go all wonky, but if you want to see how far i've got you can see here. Unfortunately comments are broken on my course blog (which is one of the many reasons i've not moved funkypancake over to the same place yet)
